About Our Substrate
Originally, Chefs Mushrooms started by supplying fresh Oyster and Lion’s Mane mushooms to well established farmer’s markets. Our mushrooms were deliciously amazing and became incredibly popular. The mushroom vendors urged us to grow more mushrooms, so we did.
We soon realized we could create amazing mushrooms, consistently. This was no accident. Behind the scenes, we were methodically operating a sterilized laboratory and grow facility. Processes we use for mushroom cultivation were developed over years of experimenting.
But what really set us apart is (was) a big huge secret. We make our substrate the hard way, starting with 100% natural raw materials. Our wood is harvested from responsibily forested areas throughout the SW. Our farm fresh ingredients are grown and harvested in the fields of local farmers throughout the SW.

Mushroom Cultivation Tips
• The best substrate for oyster mushrooms is natural hardwood
• Add a nutrient supplement to oak or maple wood substrate
• Supplement substrate with farm fresh soy hulls or wheat bran
• Pasteurize or sterilize substrate to eliminate microorganisms
• Oysters prefer high humidity of 80–95% during the fruiting stage
• Oysters prefer temperatures between 20–30°C (68–86°F)
• Fresh air exchange and proper ventilation is needed
Oyster Mushroom Facts
Oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus) are not only delicious but also packed with nutrients. Native to forests worldwide, they grow on decaying wood and play a vital role in breaking down organic matter.
Rich in protein, fiber, and antioxidants, they support immune health and may help lower cholesterol.
Surprisingly, oyster mushrooms can even “eat” plastic and petroleum-based pollutants, making them a powerful ally in environmental cleanup.
Their delicate texture and mild, slightly sweet flavor make them a favorite in stir-fries, soups, and gourmet dishes around the globe.
