About Our Substrate
Originally, Chefs Mushrooms started by supplying fresh Oyster and Lion’s Mane mushooms to well established farmer’s markets. Our mushrooms were deliciously amazing and became incredibly popular. The mushroom vendors urged us to grow more mushrooms, so we did.
We soon realized we could create amazing mushrooms, consistently. This was no accident. Behind the scenes, we were methodically operating a sterilized laboratory and grow facility. Processes we use for mushroom cultivation were developed over years of experimenting.
But what really set us apart is (was) a big huge secret. We make our substrate the hard way, starting with 100% natural raw materials. Our wood is harvested from responsibily forested areas throughout the SW. Our farm fresh ingredients are grown and harvested in the fields of local farmers throughout the SW.

Mushroom Cultivation Tips
• The best substrate for shiitake mushrooms is natural hardwood
• Add a nutrient supplement to oak or maple wood substrate
• Supplement substrate with farm fresh wheat bran
• Pasteurize or sterilize substrate to eliminate microorganisms
• Reishi prefer high humidity of 85–95% during the fruiting stage
• Reishi prefer temperatures between 70°F – 80°F (21°C – 27°C)
• Fresh air exchange and proper ventilation is needed
• Intermediate level of difficulty due to longer fruiting stage
Reishi Mushroom Facts
Reishi mushrooms (ganoderma lucidum), often called the “Mushroom of Immortality,” have been treasured in Asian medicine for over 2,000 years. Known for their glossy, reddish caps and woody texture, reishi aren’t eaten fresh but brewed into teas or taken as extracts.
They’re prized for their immune-boosting, anti-inflammatory, and stress-reducing properties. Studies suggest they may support sleep, liver health, and overall vitality.
Reishi grow on decaying hardwood in warm, humid environments and are now widely cultivated. Their legendary status and health potential make them a favorite in modern wellness practices.
